Course Guide Description
This Course Guide must be read thoroughly from beginning to end. It briefly explains what the course is about and how you may go through the content. It also gives you an estimate of how much time you’ll need to finish the course successfully. OMBA 5114 Human Capital Management System is one of the courses offered by the Faculty of Business and Technology at University of Cyberjaya (UOC). This course is worth 4 credit hours and should be covered over to 8 to 15 weeks.
This is a compulsory course for students pursuing a Master of Business Administration.
You should be able to learn independently and maximise the learning modes and environment accessible to you as an open and distant student. Please double-check the course material, course prerequisites, and how the course will be done before you begin.
It is a standard UOC practice that learner accumulate 40 study hours for every credit hour. As such, for a four-credit hour course, you are expected to spend 160 hours. Table 1 gives an estimation of how the 160 hours could be accumulated.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:
- Interpret the importance of human capital management to high performing organizations
- Relate the importance of organizational demands and environmental influence on strategic human capital management practices.
- Explain organization human capital issues in strategic decision-making.
This course is divided into 12 topics and with the last 2 topics dedicated to case study analysis. The synopsis for each topic is presented below:
Topic 1 discusses the concept of human capital management and its important components. Discussions also include the differences between human resources management and human capital management. At the end of this topic, students will be able to answer questions on the essentials of learning human capital management and its elements and the different roles played between HRM and HCM.
Topic 2 further explores the definition of human capital management and the principles surrounding this concept. Students would also be exposed to the social and economic importance of human capital management and its key focuses. At the end of the topic, the students would be able to articulate what is human capital management and its features and the impact of economic and social structures.
Topic 3 explains the process of human capital management and what are the drivers that move the human capital management. This topic further explores the question of human capital measurement and analyses the development of human capital management. At the end of this topic study, students would be able to understand the drivers and measurement of human capital management and how to report the findings of data on human capital management.
Topic 4 discusses the concept of human capital data and the importance of its interpretation. Students would also be taught the challenges in data collection and at the end of the topic they would be taught how to overcome the challenges posed towards data collection to ensure an effective human capital management.
Topic 5 explains how to measure human capital and the various models and categories of this measurement. Students would also be exposed to the approaches to measurement of human capital and the importance of measuring this capital. At the end of this chapter, the students would have the ability to correlate the human capital measurement in analytical model.
Topic 6 discusses the importance of human capital reporting. Students at the end of the topic would be exposed to internal and external reporting and how to interpret both the types of reporting. The students would also be able to identify the approaches of human capital management strategies.
Topic 7 explains the connection between the human capital management and strategic human resources management. It also explains the connection with talent management and how it correlates to performance management. Students at the end of the topic would be able to measure the impact and effectiveness of training and how does it impact the human capital management. Students would also be exposed to the knowledge of reward management and its impact on human capital management.
Topic 8 discusses the key components of human capital management and how these components help with effective human capital management. Students would also be able with this knowledge articulate how these components have increased performance management and steps taken to ensure its effectiveness so that the human capital management is enhanced.
Topic 9 explores the role of human resource and how it can develop policies from the human capital data collected towards improvement of human capital management. Discussions also include the categories of workforce and how to measure them. At the end of this topic students would be able to identify the various approaches to measuring the data collected and how to analyse such data.
Topic 10 describes business cases related to human capital management and explores the methods of transformation towards business success. It further identifies approaches that is used in human capital management in current times to ensure support and commitment towards effective human capital management. Students at the end would be able to recognize the various business drives from the perspective of human capital management.
Topic 11 discusses the connection between human resources skill with that of human capital management. It discusses the problems and gaps and what are the methods that can be deployed towards closing this gap. At the end of the topic, the students would be able to come up with a template on the skills required to ensure effective human capital management and understand the correlation with line managers and their role they play in an organization.
Topic 12 discusses the virtues of human capital management and the importance of human capital as added value in an organization. Students would be able to articulate how human capital management in the future would be like and what are the areas of development to ensure its continued effectiveness.
