    In my opinion, the combination of four-letter code according to Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) that would best represent a personality suited for the remote location or virtual team workplace situation is ISFP, representing Introverts-Sensors-Feelers-Perceivers.

    As working remotely limit physical communications with colleague and any other people, introverts would find this to be the most comfortable and conducive environment to work. As an introvert, the individual will be contented with scheduled team meetings and comfortable enough to communicate with the rest of team virtually as compared to physically. This could motivate better productivity and communication for the introverts.

    In addition to that, having a sensor personality which attributed to being responsible, detailed, and efficient, one could easily work independently without need of close supervision by managers which highly demanded by any organization with remote working culture. Sensors would always ensure that the communication is clear with other remote teams. Details and facts that will help with work task would be kept in attention closely all the time despite working remotely.

    Feelers on top of that, values face-to-face communication, recognition, feedback, and emotional aspects. This type of personality is necessary to keep relationship between team members intact despite working remotely apart from each other. Feelers would be the most supportive colleague who will always take team’s opinions into consideration. Despite the distance, feelers are the one that reaches out for a colleague when they need help. Thus, feeler helps to balance and keep in check the team members’ motivation and emotional state.

    Finally, having an attribute of being adaptable to new experiences and environment, perceiver will find it is easy to adapt to remote working structure and even enjoy the flexibility. Even tough perceiver tend to be less organized and not task oriented which may affect the job performance, the combination with sensor personality would keep the balance.

    As each personality have advantages and disadvantages in terms of working remotely, there is no specific number of structure appropriate to build a successful team. It is however necessary to have mix the MBTI structure within a team as the different structures may helps to fill up the gap each personality has that may affect working virtually in team. The mix and number of appropriate structures depends of nature of work tasks to be executed within the team and how and to what extend the team members’ involvement is needed for effective team operation.

    On the other hand, if the work environment were to be changed to a strictly-structured physical workplace setting, it can predicted that employees’ scores under Big Five personality assessment model (OCEAN) will be impacted. Employees who are used to work remotely might find it hard to execute their creativity due to the absence of flexibility, thus will reduce the trait of openness and becoming very cautious. Meanwhile under strictly-structured working environment, employees may increase their conscientiousness by putting more effort and indirectly adopt better discipline and work organization. This may result to better performance for some individuals but can also cause pressure to some. Working in physical workplace setting also will encourage extraversion traits where working closely with each requires physical social interactions. Most employees’ trait of agreeableness would also be more apparent as they likely have to comply with rule and regulations. Finally, for employees that totally against working in a physical workplace setting might experience higher score for neuroticism trait as they may express negative emotion due to the involuntary changes implemented by the company.
