The problem statement in research is to highlight the problem/subject, the need of the research for the problem/subject, the validity of the problem/subject which will be important for the value of your research. Every research paper shall list issues or questions that we need to find the answers. A clear problem statement will help people to clearly understand the topic/area/subject of research, the purpose of research, etc. A good problem statement shall be by incorporating relevant previous research papers or journals which will increase the validity of our research and shall attract the reader’s attention.

For having a solid problem statement, we should answer all the 5 “W” and 1 “H” formulas to have complete effectiveness. Below are the details.

    1) What – What is the problem?

    2) Where – Where is the problem?

    3) Who – Who says it is a problem?

    4) Why – Why is it a problem?

    5) When – When does the problem start?

    6) How – How is this a problem?

If all these elements are found in a problem statement, we shall meet the purpose of the problem statement.
